Down At The Farm
Horse
Did you know a horse is not considered a horse until it is 5 years old? Before that males are known as colts and females are known as fillies.
There are about 75 million horses in the world & no two are the same! A horse has a wide range of vision. A horse can see 360 degrees around its entire body (except for small blind spots underneath its head, and directly behind itself). This is why it's very important not to walk up right behind a horse. If you startle it you may get kicked!!
Farmer
It takes incredible determination & commitment to be a successful Farmer. But it is incredibly rewarding working on your own land. Would you like to be a Farmer?
Honey Bee
Honey bees are fascinating! Did you know bees have to visit about 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey? Just 2 tablespoons of honey would fuel a bee to fly once around the world!!
Chicken
Wow! The chicken is the closest living relative of the tyrannosaurus-rex. Did you know chickens are extremely sensitive to their environment?
Heat, noise & change of routine all affect their egg production. If you make the chickens think it is daylight (even at night) they will lay bigger eggs with harder shells. Chickens have over 200 distinct noises they make for communicating. Their language gives different alarm calls depending on which type of predator is threatening them.
Sheep
There are about 1 billion sheep on our planet, with at least 900 breeds of sheep. Sheep don’t have any upper teeth – they do have 8 bottom teeth though. A baby lamb can identify its mother by her bleat.
Sheep have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of hearing. Sheep provide us with meat, wool & leather. Lanolin is natural oil found in the sheep's fleece. It is used to make cosmetics & candle wax.
Farmer’s Wife
The Farmer’s Wife is as hard working as her husband. Her commitment & dedication see her contribute a lot to the farm’s success. She may do any number of tasks.
Mouse
Did you know a baby mouse is called a pinky or a kitten. A female mouse is called a doe, while a male mouse is called a buck. Mice are nocturnal animals and are often more active at night than during the day.
Despite being classified as herbivores, mice will eat almost anything! The average pet mouse lives between 1-1/2 and 2 years. Wild mice will only live for a few months. This is due to predation from other animals.
Scarecrow
A scarecrow discourages birds from stealing ripe grain. Why is it a scarecrow instead of a scarebird? Crows are the biggest problem bird for famers & gardeners as they tend to congregate in large groups.
Today modern methods of scaring away birds are multiple. On California farmland, highly reflective aluminized PET film ribbons are tied to the plants to create shimmers from the sun. Sometimes automatic noise guns powered with propane gas are used.
Rabbit
Did you know a rabbit has 18 toenails? 4 on each of the back feet, and 5 on each of the front! Rabbits are social animals & enjoy the companionship of humans as well as affection.
A rabbit licks and nibbles on her owner to express affection. When a rabbit is happy, she will click her teeth. Rabbits are not rodents. They belong to a family called "lagomorphs."
Cow
Calves spend the same amount of time in the womb as humans – about 9 months. How long do you think cows spend eating? 8 hours! Cows are technically female cattle that have had at least one calf.
The average cow produces 16,800 pounds of milk a year. Cows are an important food source for us, providing us milk, cheese &other dairy products. Cows can detect odours up to five miles away.
Goose
Why do geese fly in formation? It conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of him, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance.
Goat
Goats are fantastic swimmers. They have rectangular eyes – this allows them to see very well in the dark. Domestic goats are found worldwide.
Cat
Cats are the only animals that purr. Purring doesn't necessarily mean a cat is happy. Sometimes cats will purr when they are scared or hurt.
A cat's nose pad is as unique as a human fingerprint. No two nose prints are identical. A litter of kittens is called a kindle & a group of cats is called a clowder. A cat's hearing is much more sensitive than a dog's or ours. Cats have 32 muscles in each ear. They can turn their ear very quickly to pick up noise.
Alpaca
Alpacas (3 million) come from South America where they live in high country elevations up to 14,000 feet. Alpacas are members of the Camel family. They come in 22 distinct colours.
Shades of black, grey, brown, tan, red, gold & white. Alpacas are herd animals and depend on the group for their safety. Alpacas will make a very distinctive & loud alert sound if they sense danger.
Donkey
The donkey is a very strong herd animal. It is stronger than a horse of the same size. Donkeys originated from desert areas of the earth. Their large ears help keep them cool.
Donkeys have an incredible memory – they can recognise areas and other donkeys they were with up to 25 years ago. Donkeys are used as guard animals for cattle, sheep & goats. This is because they have a natural aversion to canines & will keep them away from a flock.
Turkey
Turkeys are able to adapt to a wide variety of habitats. Most turkeys are found in hardwood forests with grassy areas. The best time to see a turkey is on a warm clear day or in a light rain.
Turkeys spend the night in trees. They fly to their roosts around sunset. A wild turkey has excellent vision & hearing. Their field of vision is about 270 degrees. It is because of this they continue to escape some hunters.
Pig
Pigs are the only mammal found all over the world. They are one of the cleanest animals in the world. The only reason they roll in the mud is to keep cool.
They have no sweat glands, so cannot perspire. Pigs have sensitive snouts. They can smell up to 25 feet underground. This is why they are used to help law enforcement teams sniff out drugs. The by-products of pork can be found in thousands of everyday items. Candles, footballs, buttons, hair brushes, glass, floor waxes, crayons, cosmetics, chalk & shoes.
Rooster
A mature male chicken is called a rooster or cock. Roosters are more aggressive than the females. It is a rooster’s job to make sure his hens are safe from other roosters and are able to eat.
Ram
A ram is male sheep. Some sheep breeds have horns on both rams and ewes. Rams have larger & more striking horns than ewes.
When neither sex has horns, the breed is said to be "polled" or naturally hornless. While horns are usually removed from cows or goats, horns are seldom removed from sheep (unless they pose a danger to the animal).
Sheep Dog
Man first trained sheep dogs to herd and guard their flocks thousands of years ago.
This was a remarkable achievement, considering that sheep would have been the sheep dog’s natural prey. Sheep dog’s are trained to act on the sound of a whistle or by voice command. Today famer’s still use sheep dogs. They are also great pets!
